WhatsApp messages no longer need to be typed, but dictation is just a smarter keyboard at work

WhatsApp users can now rely on the mic feature in their Android or iOS keyboard to dictate messages and send to contacts. This means WhatsApp users do not have to type messages, though they will need to manually press send in order to push the messages across. Also, this feature can be used for other apps too, like typing a mail on Gmail.

The dictation feature can be found on the keyboard for those who are using the Google Keyboard or the regular iOS keyboard on their iPhone. This kind of dictation feature is already available for smart voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Siri as well.

Users can directly start dictating a message from within the app using the mic icon on the keyboard. This applies to both Android and iOS apps and is in fact not limited to just one app.

The dictation method can be used for any other messaging app as well, and not just WhatsApp.

How to use the dictation feature on WhatsApp

To use the dictation feature, users will need to open WhatsApp and then the contact they wish to send messages to.

Next, pull out the keyboard used for typing WhatsApp messages. WhatsApp users on Android will find a black mic icon on the top right, while this icon is present on the bottom right for iOS users.

Click on the mic icon to start dictating a message. It does seem to understand when to put ‘,’ when one says “comma” and ‘?’ when “question mark” is said. However to add the symbol for a full stop, one has to say the word itself.

Nevertheless, when done dictating a message, one will need to press the send button to finally send this dictated message to the contact. Keep in mind that it is best to enunciate each word when dictating and try not to do this in a crowded environment since the device might not pick up all the words.

WhatsApp users can edit a dictated message before sending it as well, though that will need to be done by typing and editing the text that has been written.
