RailTel, one of the most popular neutral telecom service providers, is planning to provide broadband and WiFi facilities in remote villages of India. The company has reportedly approached the country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement the plan. At present, RailTel provides Fiber optic connections to 5,900 stations across the country, especially in rural areas.
Sources claim that Railtel already has a presence in many remote areas of the country, where it provides internet services. In that case, if it takes the initiative to increase the supply of broadband and WiFi services in rural areas, it could further accelerate the Government of India’s Digital India program.
According to the ET report, the telecom department i.e. DoT has not yet responded to RailTel’s proposal. However, the company will start shaping broadband and WiFi services as soon as it gets permission from the telecom department. According to sources, Railtel plans to offer broadband services through basic phone and WiFi services. But RailTel has made it clear that it has no plans to enter the voice calling service.
Meanwhile, Railtel said it would take some time for the company’s private operators to expand its services to rural areas. Since the services of different operators are not available in many remote areas, it will take enough time to install the mobile towers and just set up the wires. However, RailTel believes that it will not be too difficult to expand broadband and WiFi services to nearby villages, as the company’s services are available at many railway stations in remote areas.
